Azercell Telecom LLC was established in January 1996 and started its commercial activities as the first GSM operator in Azerbaijan on December 15, 1996. Since the first few years of its activities, Azercell has maintained its lead position in the telecommunication market.
Azercell has brought a number of innovative technologies and concepts to Azerbaijan such like GSM technology, GPRS/EDGE, 24/7 Call Center, Azercell Express Office (one-stop-shop concept), BlackBerry® Solutions product etc.
The first mobile telecommunications services were based on postpaid system. In 1998, Azercell became one of the first companies in the world’s telecommunication sector to introduce a prepaid system (SimSim) for subscribers.
At the moment Azercell has more than 4.000 000 subscribers with population coverage – 99,8% , coverage area – 80% (excluding the 20% of occupied territories) and holds 55% of the market share in mobile telecommunications.
Azercell is the owner of the Certificate of Compliance with International ISO 10002:2004 Standards (Quality management - Customer satisfaction - Guidelines for complaints handling in organizations) and the owner of the certificate of Investors in People (IIP) Standard.
Azercell is a part of TeliaSonera. TeliaSonera was formed by a merger of Sweden’s Telia and Finland’s Sonera corporations in December 2002. Currently, it is one of the largest and the strongest International Carriers of Europe.

Taxes
According to Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Taxes, Azercell is the second largest taxpayer operating outside of the country’s oil sector.
- During its all years of activity, the company paid a total of 940.212.000 USD into the state budget.
